Some Halachos of Bikur Cholim

Family members and close friends who are accustomed to entering the home regularly should visit the sick person even on the first day upon learning of the illness, but those who do not normally come to the home should not visit until after the person is sick for three days. In the event of a serious illness, even non-regular visitors should visit the person starting on the first day of the sickness.
(Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 193:1)

The Mitzvah of visiting the sick applies even for adults to visit children, and even to visit more than once a day.
(Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 193:1)

One should not visit one's enemy who is sick (or is sitting shiva) lest one get the impression that the visitor is glad at the other's misfortune. (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 193:1)

The main points of the Mitzvah of Bikur Cholim are to assist the sick person with any personal needs and to pray for his/her well being and good health. (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 193:3)

If one has the possibility to do two mitzvos, visiting the sick and comforting a mourner, one should first visit the sick person and then visit the mourner.  However, if one must choose between the two mitzvos, comforting the mourner takes precedence because by doing so, one is doing chessed/kindness with both the living and the dead. (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 193:11)
